Witness In Paris Some: In 1783, while Benjamin Franklin was ambassador at the court of France, he had occasion to witness in Paris some of the first balloon ascents. To skeptics who asked what use a balloon might ever have, Franklin is said to have answered with the question: "What is the use of a newborn baby?"
Sometimes the threat to freedom of speech takes the form not of outright prohibition or regulation but of indirect interference. One form of interference is the legislative investigation. The legitimate scope of such investigation is very broad, and in the course of an inquiry a witness may be asked about his political activities and organizational membership. The 5th Amendment privilege against self-incrimination protects a witness from having to make incriminating statements, but often the danger to him is public ridicule and possible loss of employment, rather than criminal prosecution.
The Selective Shopper on the Prowl Paris is a shopper's heaven, especially if the shopper is on the distaff side. It is an expensive heaven, in these days, notably excepting perfumes, which are far cheaper in Paris than in America, but the cost doesn't seem to frighten tourists away. Paris est toujours Paris. |
