Roosevelt appointed him to hear charges filed against the district attorney of New York County. The same year he was counsel of the Joint Legislative Committee to investigate the affairs of New York City. His investigations revealed widespread corruption in the city government. Mayor James [. Walker and other officials resigned. This led o the election in 1933 of reform candidate fMorello La Guardia as mayor.
Furthermore, he lost some standing because of his seemingly weak handling of the investigation of Mayor James J. Walker in New York City during his second term. Roosevelt authorized the investigation of the Tammany Hall scandal, but did not intervene in the ensuing battle that culminated in the Mayor's resignation in September 1932. |
