Veyancer In London And Deputy RITSON, Joseph, English antiquarian: I Stockton-on-Tees, England, Oct. 2, 1752; d. Lon don, Sept. 23, 1803. He studied law, became COT veyancer in London and deputy high bailiff t the duchy of Lancaster. For many years he de voted his time to antiquarian researches and th editing of rare books, and he assisted Sir Walte Scott in preparing his work on the Border Min strelsy.

In this post, one of the most imnant in the Soviet foreign service, he took part : many international conferences, including those : Dumharton Oaks, Yalta, Potsdam, and San "ancisco. He became deputy foreign minister .id permanent representative of the Soviet Union the United Nations in 1946. Two years later was appointed first deputy foreign minister.x remained second in command in the depart-'•nt of foreign affairs until February 1957, when hecame the foreign minister.


QUATREMERE, ka-tre-rnar', Antoine Chrysostome (called QUATREMERE DE QUINCY), French archaeologist and politician: b. Paris, France, Oct. 28, 1755; d. there, Dec. 8, 1849. As a deputy in the legislative assembly, in August 1792 he defended the Marquis de Lafayette, threatened by a decree of accusation. Imprisoned during the Terror and condemned to death for contumacy, then acquitted, he was elected a deputy representing the Seine in the Council of Five Hundred. Banished in 1797, he was recalled after Napoleon's overthrow of the Directory and became secretary general of the council of the Seine Department.
