Traveled To London To Visit: In 1827 Niepce traveled to London to visit his brother, Claude, who was ill; he took with him the farmyard picture and other heliographs, as he named the process. On his way he stopped in Paris, where he visited the painter Louis Jacques Mande Daguerre, who was conducting research toward the same end: capturing the Camera image by "the spontaneous action of light."
GRANT, Duncan James Corrowr (1885- ), Scottish painter in the postimpressionist style. He was born in Rothiemurchus, Inverness, Scotland, on Jan. 21, 1885, and studied at the Westminster School of Art and the Slade School in London, and in Paris.
Grant traveled extensively in Europe and became a member of a variety of intellectual and professional groups. Among them were the Bloomsbury group, the London group, and the Omega Workshops. This last group, established by Roger Fry in 1913, turned out designs for fabrics, furniture, and pottery in contemporary styles.
ROBERTS, David, English painter: b. Edinburgh, Oct. 24, 1796; d. London, Nov. 25, 1864. In 1818 he advanced from the trade of a house painter to the profession of scene painting, and in 1821 painted scenery for the stage of the Drury Lane Theatre in London. Meanwhile he was studying drawing and oil painting. In 1826 and 1827 he attracted attention by his paintings of Rouen and Amiens cathedrals. Later he traveled in Spain, Morocco, Egypt, Palestine, Italy and Belgium, making sketches of picturesque buildings and landscapes which he afterward elaborated into finished pictures. |
