Tourist Picture But There:

Tourist Picture But There Madeira Madeira, long ago developed for tourism by the British, is famous for its wild, mountainous beauty, and it deserves every enthusiastic adjective that has been piled upon it. Its ox-drawn tourist sledges, on smooth cobbles, and its man-guided "running cars," in which you toboggan down from the heights into Funchal, the capital, are fixed items in the tourist picture but there is much else to do and see.

Further, the farmer might point out other details of his operation which are unusual, things you would never notice with your superficial knowledge of his problems, and you could take other pictures which would add up to a certain sale of a picture story. This matter of knowing what you want to shoot in any lolittle-known peculiarities of the place, perhaps lead to your shooting strange and unusual things you never expected to find, which the tourist never sees, and which are highly salable picture material in the best-paying markets.

A recent regional development is the chain of new Tourist Hotels, owned and operated by the National Tourist Organization, these being supplemented by certain non-government places. These establishments are called simply Tourist Pavilion if Guest House, with some exceptions which I will specify in the following list of locations: Daphni; Delphi (Tourist Hotel); Corinth; Mykinai or Mycenae; Nauplion (Hotel Am-fitrion); Epidaurus; Xylocastron (here there is, in addition, a non-government hotel, recently opened—the Tsaldari); Olympia (Hotel Spap, another non-government place); Sounion (although called Tourist Pavilion and Guest House this one has no bedrooms); Delos Island; and Mykonos Island (Hotel Lito). As a sample of the Tourist Pavilions, be sure to visit the one at Daphni, near Athens. It is charming in every way and is surrounded by a pleasant garden.
