Statuary And Museum: Some of the famous visitors have included the poet Mikhail Yuryevich Lermontov, who was slain here in a duel in 1841, and the writers Ale-ksandr Sergeyevich Pushkin and Tolstoy. Their sojourns have been commemorated in statuary and museums. The city also produces foodstuffs and clothing and has teaching and pharmaceutical institutes, two technicums, and a museum of local folklore.
