Small Negative Size: As a last resort, it is possible to remove small reflections from the negative, by means of etching or local reduction, if you work with a large size camera.
A unique property of the stereoscopic image is its apparent size. When properly blended together by the eyes, the paired photographs no longer seem three-inch-square prints, but a single image as large as life.
Because of the small negative size, the lenses of stereo cameras could be of relatively short focal length. This made it possible to take stereographs of moving objects.
To take these small portraits, Disderi first made a wet-plate negative with a special Camera that had four lenses and a plateholder that could be slid from side to side. Four exposures were made on each half of the plate; thus eight poses could be taken on one negative. A single print from this negative could then be cut up into eight separate portraits. Unskilled labor was used for this work; the production of the cameraman and printer was thus increased eightfold. |
