Selling The Picture: The script is almost indispensable to picture-story creation, as all editors and photographers have learned long since. The script is almost as important to a still photographer doing a picture story as it is to a movie director shooting a feature picture. Here are some of the advantages of shooting to a script:
1. The story is given a plot, a plan, a cohesion, an organization. This can make the difference between selling the picture it for a good price and not selling the picture it at all.
2. The photographer will not omit any of the pictures illustrating important points in the story. He will use the • script as a check list, and leave his mind free to concentrate on one picture at a time.
In fact, selling the picture is so important that many photographers have found it satisfactory to take salesmen into business with them as full partners. One of America's leading commercial and advertising photographers is highly successful almost altogether because of his sales ability, and the actual picture-taking is done by others in his organization, although the picture credits always carry his name.
The purpose of this picture taking is, of course, to sell prints to the persons who are included in the groups, and to that point the opportunities offered by the church are the same as those provided by the other organizations in your community. A special opportunity is presented by the minister as a picture subject. Take a fine, dignified portrait of him, preferably one which links him with his work by showing him in his study or in the pulpit, and you will have produced an item with amazing sales possibilities.
These pictures of the minister can be sold with no effort whatever on your own part. You can turn the sales job over to one of the money raising committees in the church and let the women who are so good at that sort of thing do the selling the picture for you. You will, of course, give them a share of all sales to go into their fund.
To realize the most profit on pictures of the pastor, you should make your photograph the best quality of which you are capable. The prints should be salon type and should be nicely mounted. Prepare several samples for the ladies who will do your selling the picture, and go all out for impressive pictures. |
