This competition is not to be taken lightly, mind you. It has ruined the portrait photography business as it was known in the old days. The department stores offer portraits at a price made possible only by a high volume. The chain studios virtually give away a low-quality product in most cases and make their profits on the sales of frames, folders and "special offers." The hosts of beginning amateurs do their best and are happy if they get enough payment to cover the cost of film and paper.
