Realistic Picture Of What:

Realistic Picture Of What It results in two competing principles within the same picture: the printed piece of paper points to a real newspaper while at the same time forming the sound hole of the guitar. The object is characterized by means of a few typical features. The bulky resonator and the neck with its strings and frets are crude, but sufficiently realistic to prevent the painting from becoming completely abstract.

There were two other categories of painters: the conservatives, who tried to give a realistic picture of what they saw, such as Vassilios Ger-menes, Loukas Gerales, Pericles Byzantios, and Achilles Varvaressos; and those who took their inspiration from folk art, such as Spyros Vasiliou, lannis Tsarouches, and Photes Kontoglou, who successfully revived the spirit and technique of Byzantine art. Many of these painters, however, did not belong solely to one school of thought but tried several paths.

White cultivated the acceptance of the accidental: his essay "Found Photography" is a profound description not only of his approach, but of his spiritual process. The photograph as metaphor can be found throughout photography. In the early days of the motion picture the visual photographic metaphor was common: D. W. Griffith's Intolerance (1916), in which the theme is unfolded by four disparate sequences of images that are suddenly intermingled in a wholly realistic yet utterly nonliteral way, is an example.
