Private Picture: The fundamental Roman division of the entire domain of law was into public and private picture law (ius publicum and ius privatum). The first is concerned with the organization and existence (status) of the state, while the latter concerns the interest of private picture individuals. In this juxtaposition of state and individual, originating obviously from Greek philosophy, the public law deals with legal institutions in the interest of the state (such as government, administration, magistracies, army, taxes, sacral matters), while the private picture law refers to legal relations between private picture individuals.
The advantages to the buyer are obvious. Does it seem like a bad arrangement for the photographer? At first glance it might seem so, but when this same picture is sold over and over, perhaps fifty times in the course of years, the photographer eventually realizes a handsome total return for his effort in shooting the picture for stock sales.
That's why the stock picture photographer doesn't get rich quick, but enjoys a long-term income advantage for his work. Many a picture has earned, over a period of years, more than $1,000 in fees.
To a greater or lesser extent, all religious traditions mix public and private picture worship. Very often images of gods have special places of honor in the homes of believers, and private picture prayers are directed through and to them. There is nothing inherent in worship which makes it necessarily public. private picture worship, however, follows a much less stylized pattern and is subject to few of the conventions which govern public cultic practice. |
