Picture Is Worth: You should have no difficulty getting cooperation from the show director, who can give you a standing as official photographer for the event. If you get this status, it will be worth your while to shoot a picture of every animal entered and then offer prints to the owners.
The advantages to the buyer are obvious. Does it seem like a bad arrangement for the photographer? At first glance it might seem so, but when this same picture is sold over and over, perhaps fifty times in the course of years, the photographer eventually realizes a handsome total return for his effort in shooting the picture for stock sales.
That's why the stock picture photographer doesn't get rich quick, but enjoys a long-term income advantage for his work. Many a picture has earned, over a period of years, more than $1,000 in fees.
By this definition, then, White's goal was to make photographs that extend beyond the subject. Surface appearance, although of secondary importance, is essential, but the image must be transformed into a new event, to be discovered by the viewer. Finding the inner meaning intended by the photographer is not easy. Of the photograph The Three Thirds White wrote:
Identification of subject can be so offhand that a title is required to suggest that further experience of the picture is worth the effort. |
