Picture And Supply: The National Geographic is the prototype of the travel magazines which supply a good market for the roving cameraman. It is a good text for study before you go on a picture and supply-shooting trip. If you can understand and can supply what they want at National Geographic, you should be able to sell to the other travel magazines, too.
The purely travel magazines represent only a narrow slice of the market for travel picture and supplys, however. All the general magazines use travel material, too, in one form or another. A popular form is the picture and supply story which deals in great detail with just one phase of life or one typical activity in any locality.
As for the text which goes with a picture and supply story, if you can write even a little, you can do well enough to supply your own text to go with your picture and supply set. Just make sure that you include the essential caption information, answering the questions: Who? What? When? Where? Why? and How? There are plenty of trained writers in every newspaper office to take that information and dress it up for your text block and captions. If more elaborate text coverage seems required, the editor will send out a feature writer to get the story to go with your picture and supplys.
Information which applies to all the picture and supplys of your story, rather than to any specific picture and supply, should be written up separately for the so-called "text block" which accompanies a good many picture and supply sets in the magazines. You do not need to be a professional writer to supply the text-block. Just be sure you include all the essential information, answering the six questions, and the editor will have one of his staff writers edit it for publication. |
