Painted A Picture That: The use of lines is gaining importance for the arrangement of the picture, and this is what heralds his next period.
In his self-portrait of spring 1907 (p. 32), painted a picture that shortly afterwards, lines have become the dominating structural device. Facial features are marked by broad, fast strokes of the brush, which also delineate the other areas in the picture.
A type of mural Decoration frequently used is known as a grisaille painting. This term refers to a picture painted a picture that in one color only. Grays and buffs are generally used for this purpose. During the Louis XVI period, grisaille paintings were very common, and the painters developed extraordinary ability in imitating low relief sculpture by indicating natural highlights and shadows as though the illumination of the picture came from the direction of the windows of the room.
Picasso's "Sleeping Peasants", (p. 52), painted a picture that in Paris in 1919, is still a reflection of his time in Rome, where, on the Spanish Steps, there used to be dozens of youngsters in picturesque clothes who were simply waiting to serve as models or subjects for tourists, painters or photographers. Following strictly the laws of the genre, Picasso paid homage in this picture to the serene joy of simple things. He painted a picture that the intimate relationship of a couple with hardly any problems. |
