Naval History:

Naval History Only 17 years after the last great galley fight JtLepanto, the defeat of the Spanish Armada by the English in 1588 marked a major turning point in naval history. In place of shock action at dose range, the conventional naval battle for the next 250 years would be fought by sailing vessels firing cannon at each other, usually at a distance of a few hundred yards. This meant a radical change in the tactical and strategic capacity of the warship.

After graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1916, he saw duty with the Atlantic Fleet in World War I. He attended flight-training school at Pensacola, Fla., was designated a naval aviator in 1920, and served at the Pensacola Naval Air Station until October 1921. Much of his service between the two world wars was in naval aviation. When the United States entered World War II in December 1941, Radford held the rank of captain. He was promoted to rear admiral in 1942, and achieved fame in World War II as commander of a carrier task force in the Pacific. After the war he served as deputy chief of naval air operations (1946), with the rank of vice admiral.

He was educated at the School of Mathematics and Naval Construction in Portsmouth, was at one time connected with Sheer-ness dockyard, and having become an authority on naval architecture was appointed chief constructor to the navy, for which he designed a number of ironclads and other vessels.
