Modern Art Carpets: Moquette carpets. The term "moquette" is applied to the French 27-inch strip hand-loomed carpets. It is similar to the Axminster in weave. There are two types; the moquette veloute has a cut pile and the moquette boucle has an uncut pile. The strips are usually treated with a small repeat motif. One of these carpets made with a special pattern was presented to George Washington by Louis XVI of France and is now in the banquet room at Mount Vernon. Carpets under this classification have also been made by machine methods.
Machine-made Rugs and Carpets
Classification. By far the most popular types of Floor coverings used today are the commercial carpets that come within the classification known as Chenille, Wilton (Brussels and ingrain), Velvet (tapestry), Axminster (moquette), and Rugs of the luster type.
Carpets should be sufficiently large to fit the dimensions of the room up to the baseboard. Where breaks occur in the shape of the room, around hemodern art carpetshs, and elsewhere, the carpet should be cut to fit, and the cut edges should be thoroughly sewed to prevent raveling. As broadloom carpets come in stock widths, one can usually be found to correspond closely to the width of a room. Any length is obtainable. |
