Left The Picture Scene: The magazine photographer cannot shoot and run, unless he has an assistant to attend to caption information, because it is important to get full caption data at the time the picture is taken. Sometimes you can go back for caption material, but on the other hand sometimes it is difficult to find the man who knows the answers after he has left the picture scene. The safest method is to get caption information as you go along. This will slow you down, to be sure, but if you are in a hurry the best substitute is to have someone help you, rather than to plan on going back.
Make it a real point, however, to include these minor elements, unless the picture is a close-up portrait or a straight record. If the picture features a group of trees, a second group or other objects a little farther away will help toward balance. In picturing such subjects as waterfalls it is often a help, rather than a hindrance, to include people who may be in the field of view. They should, however, look at the scene—not at the camera—and they should be at least twenty-five feet from the camera.
When you do get a call, especially one regarding an automobile accident, don't delay about getting there. Unless you get to the scene before the cars are moved, you may be too late for the most important picture. |
