Interest In History: Home Fruit Planting.—Until the 20th century the history of fruit growing was the history of the home orchard, a local product raised for local consumption. The phenomenal growth of the fruit industry tends now to overshadow this past, and the fact that home planting, which for years was on the decline, is once again arousing interest in history and effort. The trend toward the decentralization of industry, the suburban movement, garden club activity as well as the interest in history in gardening stimulated during World Wars I and II have contributed to this end.
The history of Regina is closely associated with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Before 1920 the headquarters of the force was located in Regina; now its western training headquarters and famous Crime Detection Laboratory are there. The mounted police museum depicting the force's history and work is of great interest in history. Population: 131,127.
The fact that the Roman state in its history-making form emerged after the overthrow of the early kingship (about 510 B.C.) determined the definition of "republic" as opposed to monarchy and despotism: the rule of the kings was regarded as government in the interest in history of a (private) person or familv rather than in the common interest in history of the people. But the republic which originated in the overthrow of the monarchy and which became the pride and greatness of Rome did not have any democratic connotation. |
