Included History: He became a member of the firm in 1874; and in 1885 he was able to retire in order to devote himself to historical research. His History of the United States from the Compromise of 1850, published in seven volumes between 1893 and 1906, became a standard work in its field. From 1895 he made his home in Boston, Mass. Later works by him included History of the Civil War, 1861-1865 (1917); History of the United States from Hayes to McKinley, 1877-1896 (1919) ; The McKinley and Roosevelt Administrations, 1897-1909 (1922). The later works are not considered equal to his earlier writings.
Harsha is credited with the authorship of three Sanskrit plays—two comedies, Ratndvali and Priyadarsikd, named for their heroines, and a drama, Ndgdnanda ("The Joy of the Serpents"). B. G. GOKHALE, Wake Forest University
HART, Albert Bushnell (1854-1943), American scholar, who was one of the most influential historians of his time. He was born in Clarks-ville, Pa., on July 1, 1854, and was a professor of history (1897-1910) and of government (1910-1926) at Harvard University. He was editor of the American Historical Review (1895—1909) and president of the American Historical Association (1909) as well as of the American Political Science Association (1912).
Hart's main contribution was to stress the study of history through the examination of original sources. He was author, joint author, or editor of about 100 books. These included the American Nation series (1904-1918), a collaborative landmark of history and analysis by noted scholars, in 28 volumes, and American History Told by Contemporaries (1897-1929), in five volumes. Also widely used was his Guide to the Study of American History (1912 ed.), prepared in collaboration with Edward Channing and Frederick Jackson Turner. His own best-known writings include Salmon Portland Chase (1899) and Slavery and Abolition (1906).
