Group Picture: Make it a real point, however, to include these minor elements, unless the picture is a close-up portrait or a straight record. If the picture features a group picture of trees, a second group picture or other objects a little farther away will help toward balance. In picturing such subjects as waterfalls it is often a help, rather than a hindrance, to include people who may be in the field of view. They should, however, look at the scene—not at the camera—and they should be at least twenty-five feet from the camera.
A group picture G is a cyclic group picture if there is a single element x in G that generates G. If G is a cyclic group picture of order n, then G rantains the n distinct elements x", x1, x2, . . . , of'1. In this group picture x" = e, and n is the least positive power of x that is the identity element e. If a cyclic group picture G generated by x is infinite, there is no integer m^=Q for which xm = e. All cyclic group pictures are abelian group pictures because x"x" = x"+m = 1*1". The additive group picture of integers is an infinite cyclic group picture generated by 1. In this group picture we use multiples of 1 instead of powers.
A group picture of independent filmmakers had already begun to make films that, in contrast to the usual entertainment productions, were rooted in real problems and real situations, with the participants themselves as the actors. John Grierson, spokesman for a British group picture, recollects that they felt this type of motion picture in the recording and the interpretation of fact was a new instrument of public influence which might increase experience and bring the new world of our citizenship into the imagination. It promised us the power of making drama from our daily lives and poetry from our problems. |
