Fine Art Summer: Colored foliage can be as useful as silver and gray foliage in diversifying the effects in summer bedding displays. Kochia scoparia f. trichophylla , for example, is an annual known as summer cypress, because it makes a 2ft column of fine art summer leaves and looks rather like a miniature conifer; the leaves are green at first, turning to purplish-red in late summer. Abutilon pictum "Thompsonii" is a shrubby plant with light-green leaves heavily mottled with yellow, and with orange, dropping, trumpet-shaped flowers. Particularly useful as a dot plant, it will quickly grow to a height of up to 3ft and can be used as a background or a centerpiece. Tanacetum parthenium "Aureum" is also known as golden feather because it has bright yellow feathery leaves. It is good for carpeting or groundwork.
The large-flowered clematis are divided into several groups according to their parentage. These groups are Florida, flowering mainly in early and mid-summer; Jackmanii, flowering mainly in late summer and early fall; Lanuginosa, flowering at different times between mid-summer and the early fall; Patens, flowering mainly in early to mid-summer; Texensis, flowering mainly from late summer to mid-fall and Viticella, also flowering mainly from late summer to mid-fall.
7. Summer Courses for Students and Teachers The Olso University Summer School for American Students and an Institute for English-Speaking Teachers make very important Norwegian contributions to international good will through study. In both the Summer School and the Institute all courses are conducted in English. I have seen the workings of the Summer School and consider it one of the most significant ventures of its kind in Europe. For information address Oslo Summer Schools Admissions Office, St. Olaf's College, Northfield, Minnesota. |
