Fine Art Spars: Anodized spars can be merely washed. Non-anodized spars should be cleaned up with an abrasive (scouring powder, scouring pads, or fine art spars wet sandpaper) and then coated with one of the clear coatings formulated for this purpose. If you want a really shiny spar, buff with rubbing compound before coating. While you're cleaning, check spars for straightness, check fittings for looseness and defects (cracks in castings), and oil all sheaves.
SPARS (VARNISHED)
For example, suppose you have a new spar 8" in diameter and 40' long. Then (8/12 x 40 x 2.5) -r 500 = 67/500 or approximately Vs gallon (1 pint) for the priming coat. For refinishing work, a pint is enough for about ll/i coats. To determine the requirements for painted spars, change the coverage factor to 325 for new work and to 500 for previously painted wood. |
