Fine Art Places: 9. Places for nostalgia are found on the tip-top of Montmartre in the place du Tertre sector. Lapin Agile (Lively Rabbit) leads them all, I should say, in re-creating the arty past in a setting of careful decrepitude.
10. Small places for dancing, with a genteel clientele, would include Jimmy's Club and Le Schubert, both in Montparnasse.
11. Places of "middlesex" leanings would include fashionable Carrolfs and racy Carrousel, both near the Champs-Elysees, and the more lowbrow Le Monocle, in Montparnasse. "Homo"-and-otherwise perversions, however, even though fashionably caparisoned, tend to leave most visitors pretty chilly after the initial shock wears off. It is fair to say that the first two places named offer lavish Floor shows and they are not nearly as blatant and provocative as were the prewar Berlin places of that type.
RESTAURANT, res'to-rant (Fr. restaurer, to restore), a place where meals are sold to the public. Customers may serve themselves, as in cafeterias (q.v.), or waiters may bring food to the tables where the customers sit. In other eating places, customers sit at counters to be served.
Origin of the Restaurant.—Places for public eating, in many respects counterparts of the restaurant, were known in the ancient world. As long as people traveled and were away from their homes at mealtimes, there was need for places where they could stop to eat.
