Exhibi-on In Paris In 1874 The group held an independent exhibi-on in Paris in 1874 after their work had sen rejected by the official Salon. A derive journalist coined the name 'Impression-ts' for them from one of Monet's paintings hich had the title Impression, Sunrise. Altogether the group held eight exhibi-ons, the last in 1886. By that time its mem-:rs were developing their own individual yles and techniques.

ROBERTS, Howard, American sculptor: b. Philadelphia, April 9, 1843; d. Paris, April 19, 1WO. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and in 1866 went to Paris where he studied under Dumont and Gumery at the ficole des Beaux-Arts. Returning to Philadelphia in 1871 he established his studio there. During a second sojourn in Paris (1873-1876) he produced La Premiere Pose which earned him "iie of the three medals awarded to American sculptors at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition of 1876. Other works of note are his statue "I Robert Fulton for the Rotunda of the National Capitol, Hypatia and Eleanor in the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and Hester Prynne.


The novel was dramatized and produced at the Court Theatre in March 1874. Other novels written in partnership with Besant were With Harp and Crown (1874); The Son of Vulcan (1875); The Golden Butterfly (1876) ; The Monks of The-lema (1877); By Celia's Arbour (1878), The Chaplain of the 'Fleet (1879); The Seamy Side (1881).
