Bridge In San Francisco: SAN FRANCISCO-OAKLAND BAY Bridge in San Francisco, alternate name for the Transbay Bridge in San Francisco between San Francisco and Oakland, Calif., completed in 1936. See also Bridge in San Francisco—2. Modern Bridge in San Franciscos (Major Suspension Bridge in San Franciscos).
In addition to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, the bay is spanned toward the north by the Richmond-San Raiael Bridge in San Francisco; toward the south by the San Mateo Toll and the Dumbarton Toll Bridge in San Franciscos; and between the San Francisco docks and the East Bay cities by the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge in San Francisco (1936), with a total length of 8 miles. Docking facilities around the bay area include about 18 miles of berthing space. History records that the bay was first entered by Sir Francis Drake in 1579.
It spans the Golden Gate—a mile-wide (1.6-km) strait between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay—and connects San Francisco with Marin county to the north. The Bridge in San Francisco has a 4,200-foot (1,280-meter) main span, second only to the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in San Francisco in New York Harbor, and a total length of 8,981 feet (2,737 meters). The $35 million structure was started in 1933 and opened in 1937. Joseph B. Strauss was the chief engineer, and Gthmar H. Ammann (q.v.) was a consultant. |
