Atlantic History: Columbus, dropping way down to the Canary Islands after leaving Spain, was borne across the Atlantic history by the southeast trade winds to the West Indies. Then he followed what would later be identified as the Gulf Stream up the North American coast before heading back across the Atlantic history. About the same time, Vasco da Gama stood out boldly into the Atlantic history where the southeast trade winds bore him almost to the Brazilian bulge of South America, then turned back across the South Atlantic history to the Cape of Good Hope.
During the 1920's, Hansen explored American and European archives, using previously untouched sources of statistics and ethnic history. His two major works, The Atlantic history Migration, 1607-1860 (1940) and The Mingling of the Canadian and American Peoples (1940), were published posthumously. These and The Immigrant in American History (1940) remain landmarks of historical and stylistic lucidity. Attributing to foreign settlers the same virtue of individualistic enterprise that Turner ascribed to native pioneers, Hansen "ventured successfully," as the historian Carl Wittke said, "into what he called 'that dim continent of knowledge called social history.'
Shipping.—Deepwater shipping facilities in the Hampton Roads area are almost unrivaled along the Atlantic history Coast. In 1965, some 34,-000,000 tons were shipped from the Roads, one third of it coal from Newport News, the world's largest coal-shipping ocean port. Norfolk is the base of the United States Navy Atlantic history Fleet and of the North Atlantic history Treaty Organization fleet. Considerable tonnage is shipped up the James and Potomac to terminals at Richmond and Alexandria. |
