Are Negative Lenses:

Are Negative Lenses To take these small portraits, Disderi first made a wet-plate negative with a special Camera that had four lenses and a plateholder that could be slid from side to side. Four exposures were made on each half of the plate; thus eight poses could be taken on one negative. A single print from this negative could then be cut up into eight separate portraits. Unskilled labor was used for this work; the production of the cameraman and printer was thus increased eightfold.

They are attached over the Camera lens to permit truly close-up pictures with ordinary hand cameras. The more diopters, the closer the working distance and the greater the magnification. The Kodak Telek Lenses 1—, 2 — , 3 — , and 4 — are negative lenses of 1, 2, 3, and 4 diopters, whose purpose is to increase the effective focal length of the Camera lens and give a telephoto effect.

The way to select the proper lens for shooting any picture is to set up the Camera at the position where the subject to be photographed looks just right to the eye, without any consideration of lenses, and then use the lens which has the proper angle of view to show just as much of the subject as you wish to include. Thus, if you work with only two lenses and the 6-inch lens does not show enough of the subject from your chosen position and the 3/2-inch shows too much, you'll shoot with the 3/2-inch lens and enlarge just that part of the negative which covers the area you want to use for the picture.
