Allegorical Picture Of 1857: This technique, which came to be called combination printing, appears to have been used by Gustave Le Gray of Paris to produce his dramatic seascapes, which were widely praised when they were shown in London in 1856. Making multiple prints from several negatives was carried to an extreme by Oscar G. Rejlander, a Swede working in Wolverhampton, England in his allegorical picture of 1857, The Two Ways of Life?
Giorgione (1478 ?—1510) was the first Italian to paint a frankly carnal picture. His allegorical "Concert Champetre" shows an idyllic group of two nude women listening to the lutes of two dressed musicians; in the distance is a poetic background of trees and luminous clouds. In the character of the landscape treatment and in the naturalistic subject matter this picture was a model for many later artists. Giorgione understood humanism, the moods and feelings of man, and how they are affected by the moods of nature. He was a genius in the use of color, and as a portraitist had the capacity to represent the innermost thoughts of his models. His life was unfortunately short, but his student, young Titian, finished many of Giorgione's uncompleted works.
